What to Expect During Your In-Person Reiki Session

Welcome

If you’re here, chances are you’ve heard about Reiki from a friend, seen it mentioned in a wellness space, or felt curious about exploring a different way of caring for yourself.

You may be wondering:

“What exactly happens during a Reiki session?”

“Will it feel strange?”

“What am I supposed to do?”

These are all normal questions.

A Reiki session is simply an opportunity to slow down, relax, and create space for your mind, body, and spirit to settle. Many people seek Reiki when they are feeling stressed, overwhelmed, emotionally drained, navigating a life transition, grieving a loss, or simply longing to reconnect with themselves.

There is nothing you need to prepare, perform, or believe in. Your only job is to arrive as you are.

Before Your Session

To help you get the most from your experience:

  • Wear comfortable clothing.

  • Drink water before your appointment.

  • Avoid rushing if possible.

  • Consider what has been weighing on you or what you would like more of in your life, though setting an intention is completely optional.

  • Arrive with curiosity rather than expectations.

Many first-time clients worry about “doing it right.” There is no right way to experience Reiki.

When You Arrive

We’ll begin with a brief conversation about what brings you in and what support you’re seeking.

You may want to share:

  • Areas of stress or concern

  • Life transitions you’re navigating

  • Physical or emotional challenges

  • Goals or intentions for the session

You are welcome to share as much or as little as feels comfortable.

During the Session

You will remain fully clothed and relax comfortably on a treatment table.

The environment is intentionally calm and peaceful, including soft lighting and gentle music.

Reiki is offered through light touch or hands held slightly above the body, depending on your preference and comfort level.

During the session, many clients experience:

  • Deep relaxation

  • Warmth or tingling sensations

  • A feeling of heaviness or lightness

  • Emotional release

  • Mental clarity

  • A sense of peace or calm

Some people notice a great deal during the session. Others notice very little in the moment but observe shifts afterward.

Both experiences are completely normal.

Some clients remain awake throughout the session. Others drift into a meditative state or fall asleep.

There is no “correct” experience.

After the Session

At the end of the session, we’ll spend a few minutes discussing anything that came up and answering any questions you may have.

Following Reiki, people often report feeling:

  • More relaxed

  • More grounded

  • Less mentally cluttered

  • More emotionally balanced

  • More connected to themselves

Sometimes insights or shifts continue to unfold over the following days.

To support yourself after the session:

  • Drink plenty of water.

  • Allow yourself extra rest if needed.

  • Pay attention to thoughts, feelings, dreams, or insights that arise.

  • Practice self-compassion.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice that promotes relaxation, stress reduction, and overall wellbeing. It is a gentle, non-invasive approach that supports the body’s natural capacity for balance and restoration.

Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?

No.

People from many different backgrounds and belief systems receive Reiki. You do not need any particular spiritual belief or prior experience to benefit from the relaxation and restorative aspects of a session.

What does Reiki feel like?

Every person experiences Reiki differently.

You may feel warmth, tingling, relaxation, emotional release, or a deep sense of calm. Some people feel very little during the session itself and notice changes later.

All experiences are valid.

Will I be touched?

Light touch may be used during the session. However, hands-off Reiki is always available.

Your comfort is important. We will discuss your preferences before we begin.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing is recommended. You will remain fully clothed throughout the session.

Can Reiki help with stress and anxiety?

Many clients seek Reiki because they are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, emotionally exhausted, or disconnected from themselves.

While Reiki is not a medical treatment, many people find it to be a valuable part of their overall wellness and self-care practices.

Can Reiki heal medical conditions?

Reiki is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

It is a complementary wellness practice that can be used alongside medical care, therapy, and other forms of support.

What if I don’t feel anything?

That is completely okay.

Some people have noticeable sensations during their first session, while others simply enjoy an hour of rest and relaxation. The value of Reiki is not determined by how much you feel during the appointment.

How many sessions will I need?

Every person’s journey is different.

Some people schedule Reiki for support during a specific challenge or transition. Others incorporate regular sessions into their ongoing wellness routine.

Together, we can discuss what feels most supportive for your needs.

Is Reiki associated with a religion?

No.

Reiki is a wellness practice that can be experienced by people of any faith tradition, spiritual path, or no spiritual affiliation at all.

What if I’m nervous?

Many first-time clients are.

Trying something new can feel vulnerable. My goal is to create a welcoming, judgment-free space where you can relax, ask questions, and simply be yourself.

You don’t need to know anything about Reiki before you arrive.

You only need to bring yourself.

A Final Thought

Life asks a lot of us.

Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause long enough to listen to ourselves.

Whether you’re seeking relaxation, clarity, support during a transition, or simply a moment to breathe, Reiki offers a space to reconnect with the wisdom already within you.

I look forward to welcoming you.
